The Way People Search Is Changing — And It's the Biggest Opportunity Your Business Has Seen in Years
Think about the last time you Googled something you wanted to buy or just needed some quick information on.
You typed in a few words, got ten links, clicked two or three, scrolled through pages that weren't quite right, went back, tried different words, maybe clicked an ad, ended up somewhere unhelpful. And even when you do find what you were looking for, just think how much faster it would have been to simply ask AI.....
Sound familiar?
Now think about what happens when you ask an AI the same question. You describe exactly what you need in plain English. You get a direct answer in seconds. No scrolling or guessing.
That shift — from typing keywords into Google to having a conversation with an AI — is changing the whole game for online businesses. And if you run a Shopify store, it's one of the most important things happening right now.

Google Was Great. But It Got Complicated.
Google transformed how we find things. For years, getting your business in front of people meant ranking on page one of search results — and if you had the budget, running Google Ads.
But here's the problem: Google Ads became very expensive as it changed its ranking algorithm. What was once an affordable way for small businesses to compete with bigger players has become a highly competitive environment, where the brands with the sizeable budgets dominate the top spots.
And organic SEO? That takes months of consistent work, technical know how, and a fair bit of luck.
The result is that for years, discovery has been unequal, with Google search dominating. Now that is starting to change.
How People Are Actually Searching Now
People are talking to AI — and AI is answering back.
Instead of "blue trainers women size 6 waterproof UK," people are saying things like: *"Can you find me some waterproof women's trainers for walking in the Lake District? I need them by next week and my budget is around £80."*
The AI understands the whole request. It doesn't return ten blue links — it gives a curated answer, often recommending specific products from specific stores. And increasingly, it can help complete the purchase without the shopper ever leaving the conversation.
This is already happening at scale. Research from early 2026 found that 41% of consumers have used AI platforms for product discovery, and a third of those say they've fully replaced their old search habits. AI-referred traffic to online stores grew by over 800% year-on-year on Black Friday 2025. These aren't small numbers.
For shoppers, this is a better experience. For businesses, it's a completely new playing field — and a much fairer one.
What Is Agentic Commerce?
You might have seen this term floating around. It sounds technical, but the idea is straightforward.
Agentic commerce is where an AI doesn't just help you find a product — it handles the whole shopping journey on your behalf. You tell it what you want, it searches across stores, compares products, checks reviews and availability, and can even complete the purchase for you. You approve it, and it's done.
Think of it like having a personal shopper who works in seconds.
This is already live. ChatGPT launched its shopping checkout feature in September 2025, with Shopify merchants beginning to be onboarded in early 2026. Google launched its own version — the Universal Commerce Protocol — in January 2026, backed by partners including Shopify, Walmart, Target, Stripe, and Visa. Microsoft Copilot has a similar checkout feature live now too.
The big platforms — the ones that control how people discover and buy things — have all moved in the same direction at the same time. That tells you everything about where this is heading.
What This Means for Shopify Store Owners
Here's where it gets really interesting for businesses like yours.
With traditional search, discovery was largely determined by your budget, your domain authority, and how long you'd been building SEO. A brand new Shopify store with a small marketing budget was almost invisible next to an established competitor spending thousands a month on Google Ads.
With AI search, the rules are different.
AI doesn't care how much you've spent on ads. It reads your product information — your descriptions, your reviews, your pricing, your stock levels — and decides whether your product is the right answer to what someone is looking for. If your product data is clear, accurate, and well-structured, your store has a genuine chance of being recommended to someone who's never heard of you before.
That's a fundamental shift. A small Shopify store with great products and well-written listings can now compete on equal terms with a much larger retailer. The barrier to being found is dropping.
On Shopify already? Then you're already in a good position. Shopify has been building integrations with both ChatGPT's commerce system and Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, meaning Shopify stores are among the first to be included in these new AI-powered discovery channels. The infrastructure is being built for you.
AI Advertising Is Coming Too
Traditional Google Ads maybe expensive, but advertising isn't going away — it's evolving.
Google is already testing a new format called **Direct Offers**, which lets businesses present exclusive discounts directly inside AI search results, targeted at shoppers who are actively ready to buy. Instead of paying for clicks from people who might be interested, you're appearing in front of people who are already in buying mode.
The cost model for AI-powered sales is also different. ChatGPT's commerce system, for example, charges merchants a small percentage of completed sales — not upfront clicks. You only pay when someone actually buys. For businesses who've watched their Google Ads budget disappear with little to show for it, that's a much more appealing proposition.
This space is very new and still taking shape, but the direction is clear: paid advertising in AI-powered search is going to become a significant channel, and it's starting with a much lower barrier to entry than the Google Ads environment that exists today.
The Businesses That Move Early Will Win
Every major shift in how people shop creates a window of opportunity. The businesses that understood SEO early built huge advantages. The ones who got on social media early built audiences before it became pay-to-play. The pattern repeats every time.
Right now, most businesses are still focused almost entirely on Google. That means the window for getting ahead in AI search is still open.
The practical steps aren't complicated:
- Make sure your product descriptions are clear and specific. AI reads them the same way a customer would, but it's looking for precise details — materials, sizing, use cases, what makes your product different.
- Get your reviews in order. AI pulls from review data when making recommendations. More genuine reviews, across multiple platforms, gives you more visibility.
- Keep your product data accurate. Pricing, availability, and specifications need to be up to date. AI won't recommend a product it can't verify.
None of this requires a big budget. It requires attention to the basics — and getting them right now, before everyone else catches up.
The Shift Is Already Here
The art of search hasn't just changed — it's changed quickly, and most businesses haven't noticed yet.
People are searching differently. They're trusting AI to find things for them, filter out the noise, and increasingly, to do the buying on their behalf. The businesses that show up in those AI recommendations are going to have an enormous advantage over those that don't.
If you run a Shopify store, you're in a better position than most to take advantage of this. The platform is already integrating with the major AI commerce channels. Your products are one step closer to being discoverable in this new world than you might think.
The question is just whether your store is ready to be found.
